FS Shaders

Cinematic shaders for Iris and OptiFine 1.21, bringing physically based sky scattering, soft sun and moon shadows, volumetric lighting, reflective water, animated foliage, bloom, and filmic color grading to Minecraft Java Edition.

About FS Shaders

FS Shaders is a lightweight, performance-first shader pack for Minecraft Java Edition. Its goal is to deliver more realistic lighting — including soft shadows, reflective water, wet-weather surfaces, and moving foliage — without demanding high-end hardware.

The pack is built around the OptiFine / Iris rendering pipeline, balancing visual quality with efficient performance so that mid-range systems can still maintain a smooth frame rate.

Features

  • Soft shadows: Percentage-Closer Filtering is combined with slope-scaled bias and shadow distortion to create smoother shadow edges while providing additional resolution close to the player.
  • Reflective water and glass: Screen-space reflections add reflections to water and glass, while analytic wave-normal ripples provide subtle surface movement. Fresnel behavior makes water darker when viewed head-on and highly reflective at grazing angles.
  • Rain wetness: During rainfall, flat surfaces exposed to the sky become darker and glossier. They can reflect the sun, moon, and nearby torchlight.
  • Melting ice: Melting ice reflects approximately three times more strongly than water and features a slow-moving, semi-liquid surface.
  • Dynamic sky: A time-of-day gradient is paired with procedural clouds. During storms, the clouds become thicker and gradually lose saturation, shifting toward gray.
  • Wind: Leaves flutter as traveling gust fronts pass through, while grass and plants sway from their base. Sand also receives a subtle shimmering effect.
  • ACES tonemapping: The shader uses a full linear-light pipeline with ACES tonemapping for richer, more cinematic color and contrast.

Performance

FS Shaders uses a hybrid deferred pipeline that shades each screen pixel only once. Aggressive early-outs further reduce unnecessary work: reflections skip pixels that cannot reflect anything, and shadow calculations are omitted wherever they would have no visible impact.

The pack also avoids heavy volumetric raymarching, allowing it to target high frame rates on mid-range GPUs. Graceful fallback behavior helps preserve the rendering pipeline when a particular feature is unavailable on your hardware or configuration, preventing black-screen failures.

Requirements

  • Minecraft Java Edition
  • OptiFine or Iris with Sodium
  • A GPU compatible with GLSL 1.20

Installation

  1. Download the .zip file — do not unzip it.
  2. Place the archive in .minecraft/shaderpacks.
  3. Launch the game and open: Options → Video Settings → Shaders.
  4. Select FS Shaders from the shader list.

Feedback

Bug reports and suggestions are welcome. When reporting an issue, include your GPU model and the exact Minecraft, Iris, or OptiFine version so the problem can be reproduced more easily.
