Shrimple (Minimalist Shader)
Resource Overview
Shrimple is a shader pack designed specifically for Minecraft Java Edition. As the name implies, it strives for a perfect balance between preserving the pure aesthetic of the base game and incorporating modern graphics technology. Rather than merely chasing a stack of flashy effects, it aims to maintain a minimalist "vanilla" look while providing players with advanced visual enhancements, including optional shadows, dynamic colored lighting, and ray tracing. It is a work that moves with ease between minimalism and extreme visual quality.
Features and Visual Enhancements
While keeping visual intrusion to a minimum, this shader significantly improves the game's visual depth and immersion through a range of optional graphical technologies:
- Dynamic Vegetation Sway: Gives life to the plants in the game, allowing them to dance with the wind and adding vitality to the world.
- FXAA (Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing): Effectively smoothes jagged object edges, making the image finer and softer.
- Sharp/Soft Shadows: Players can customize shadow edges to their preference, choosing between crisp, distinct silhouettes or softer, more natural transitions.
- CSM (Cascaded Shadow Maps): Optimizes the balance between rendering precision and performance for near and far shadows.
- Dynamic Colored Lighting: A key feature that changes the game's atmosphere; light colors real-time impact the surrounding environment, creating vibrant color spaces.
- Ray-traced Block Light Shadows: Uses ray tracing technology to accurately calculate shadows cast by block light sources, providing highly realistic occlusion effects.
- Volumetric Fog Lighting: Simulates light scattering in a real atmosphere, creating dreamlike "God rays" (Tyndall effect) as beams of light pass through the fog.
- POM (Parallax Occlusion Mapping): Adds a 3D depth perception to flat textures, increasing geometric detail in materials.
- Normal Mapping: Simulates surface bumps and details, making lighting reflections on textures appear more realistic.
- Specular Mapping: Controls the gloss and reflectivity of object surfaces, distinguishing the texture of different materials (such as wet ground or metallic finishes).
Prerequisites
To ensure that all of the above features function correctly—especially regarding the advanced lighting and shadow calculations—please adhere to the following compatibility requirements:
Note: Any features marked with (***) (including Cascaded Shadow Maps, Dynamic Colored Lighting, and Ray-traced Block Light Shadows) strictly require Iris 1.6** or higher to be enabled. Older versions or other loaders may not support these core features.
Credits and Contributors
The birth of this project would not have been possible without the generous help and technical support of community members. Special thanks to the following contributors:
- Fayer: Provided extensive and in-depth assistance in Quality Assurance (QA), technical support, bug fixing, and drove the continuous progress of the project.
- Builderb0y: Provided critical assistance in optimizing the voxelization core code, particularly with lower-level logic regarding bit-magic.
- Bálint: Created the refined Iris warning prompt system and provided additional support for complex bit-shifting operations.
- Tech: Assisted in implementing the improved soft shadow filtering algorithm and dithering processing, significantly enhancing shadow visual quality.
