Fragile Bones: Glimmer — Dimensional Expansion, Infinite Exploration
"Fragile Bones" is a Minecraft modpack centered around the "Chest Cavity" mod. By transforming anatomical organs into functional components, this project establishes a non-linear progression path, delivering a fresh and immersive gameplay experience to players.
In response to widespread community requests to broaden the scope of the game, we have launched the Fragile Bones: Glimmer branch (also known as Fragile Bones: Dimensions). Compared to the base modpack, this branch integrates numerous acclaimed dimension mods, constructing a vastly expanded content ecosystem. Furthermore, we have cleaned up and optimized content previously criticized by players (such as the Wither Storm) to ensure an environment where players can explore the essence of these dimension mods without constraints.
Even with the addition of these dimensions, "Glimmer" adheres strictly to the original design principle of non-linear progression. We aim to minimize restrictions on player agency as much as possible, maintaining balance only to the extent that it doesn't stifle the core game mechanics. This flexibility provides players with the necessary space to experiment and uncover the complex synergies between various mods.
Branch Features
-
Dimensional Ecosystem Reconstruction
- Introduces a vast array of unique indigenous creatures and biomes through new dimensions.
- Diverse mod lineup: Starting from the classic "The Twilight Forest," players will gradually venture into more modern and intriguing dimensional spaces.
-
Comprehensive Optimization & Updates
- Fixed item-duplication exploits left over from the base Fragile Bones pack and significantly improved performance.
- Added highly requested items, such as the Dragon Nest Locator Pearl.
- Enhanced the depth of organ combinations and improved the compatibility and synergy of legacy organs when facing challenges in new dimensions.
-
Organ Mechanic Innovations
- Introduced a temperature system: Organ functions now adjust dynamically based on environmental temperature, providing more strategic gameplay.
- Expanded the base organ traits found in the original "Chest Cavity" system.
- Added an organ recycling mechanism, allowing players to convert surplus organs into in-game currency using dedicated machinery.
Developer-Friendly Ecosystem
- The project inherits the original core architecture, ensuring that existing DLC contents run seamlessly within this branch.
- By supporting more diverse registration and extension methods, the threshold for add-on development has been significantly lowered, fostering a friendlier creation environment for developers.
Glimmer Branch Q&A
"Glimmer" is the nickname for this dimensional branch (derived from the first three letters of "Dimensions"). It inherits the non-linear design philosophy of the original Fragile Bones while focusing on the acquisition of unique biological organs and resource integration across different dimensions.
Why develop the "Glimmer" branch?
- Driven by player demand: Since the initial release, many players have expressed a desire to create builds and explore unique organ drops in different dimensions. We decided to realize these wishes by gradually introducing new dimensions into Fragile Bones.
- Modular design requirements: Some concepts are brilliantly creative but place too much strain on stability to be forced into the base pack. Therefore, we chose to launch an independent branch, providing a unique gameplay environment without compromising the stability of the base pack.
- Exploring potential synergies: Dimension mods provide a broader stage for organ utility. We aim to capitalize on this to unearth the highlights of these mods, optimize them, and integrate them into our future modpack projects.
Why maintain a non-linear design?
- Ensuring diverse experiences: Although the community includes many highly skilled players, the core mission of Fragile Bones is to validate the feasibility of a "gameplay-expansion development model." By utilizing a non-linear approach, we ensure that players of all skill levels—from hardcore explorers to casual users—can enjoy the full breadth of content without being gatekept by mandatory progressions or excessive difficulty spikes.
- Respecting mainstream playstyles: Data shows that about 70% of "graduated" players prefer the "Gluttony" build path because it is simple, forgiving, and logical. Introducing a forced progression would force players to constantly refer to walk-throughs, degrading the experience and harming the modpack's reputation.
- Phased planning: We do have long-term plans to create a modpack with forced, linear progression similar to "RLCraft," but that is a project for the future. At least within the current development cycle of Fragile Bones, we will not abandon our non-linear design stance, thereby protecting the players' freedom of exploration.
What are the criteria for selecting dimension mods?
- High Stability: In "Glimmer," we have removed performance-heavy mods like "Tom's Simple Storage" and "Wither Storm," freeing up resources to accommodate a variety of dimension mods.
- Established Systems: We prioritize mods that possess their own well-defined progression systems. This helps mitigate the lack of clear objectives inherent in non-linear design. In future updates, we will steadily introduce dimension-exclusive endgame materials and organs to motivate players to conquer these environments using the unique mechanics of Fragile Bones.
- Content Richness: We adhere to a "quality over quantity" selection logic. Dimension mods must have solid, expansive content. For dimensions lacking depth, we are cautious, only considering them if we truly run out of things to update. Perhaps by then, we will have already completed the 1.20.1 remake of Fragile Bones. (In fact, I have already independently ported "Chest Cavity" from Fabric to Forge and implemented some interesting features, which you will see in our upcoming packs.)
