Nine Years Later, Minecraft Finally Adds Concrete Stairs and Slabs
For nearly a decade, Minecraft builders have been waiting for one thing: when would concrete finally get stair and slab variants?
Concrete was added to the game in the 2017 World of Color Update. With its vibrant colors, smooth textures, and consistent visual style, it quickly became one of the go-to materials for builders.
Unfortunately, Mojang did not add concrete stairs and slabs at the same time. When players wanted to build smooth, colorful structures, they could only make do with quartz, stained terracotta, or full concrete blocks as substitutes. This became a typical example of a feature in Minecraft that was “only half-finished.”
Now, the wait is finally over. In the latest Java Edition 26.3 snapshot, Mojang added concrete stairs and slabs in all 16 colors.
Concrete Stairs and Slabs Have Finally Arrived
In the past, full concrete blocks often made architectural details difficult to handle. Roofs, arches, gradient paths, and modern interior designs all required players to repeatedly search for alternatives. Quartz or stone bricks could provide stair and slab shapes, but it was difficult to match the vibrant colors of concrete.
With the corresponding stairs and slabs now available, builders can continue using their original color schemes while gaining more precise control over their structures. Modern skyscrapers, brightly colored stadium stands, and urban roads can all achieve more natural edges and transitions.
How to Craft Concrete Stairs and Slabs
Concrete stairs and slabs use the same standard recipes as other stone and block variants, but they must be crafted with concrete blocks rather than concrete powder.
- Concrete slabs: Place 3 concrete blocks of the same color horizontally in any row of the crafting table to obtain 6 concrete slabs.
- Concrete stairs: Arrange 6 concrete blocks of the same color in a stair shape, placing 1 block in the first row, 2 in the second row, and 3 in the third row to obtain 4 concrete stairs.
When concrete was first added to the game, Mojang seemed to want to limit the number of block variants to prevent the Creative inventory and crafting recipes from becoming too crowded. However, as player feedback continued to grow, the development team gradually recognized the practical need for concrete stairs and slabs.
Although this addition arrived very late, it finally makes concrete a much more complete building material.
