Minecraft's New Item Changes the "Whoopee Cushion" Meta Forever
With cushions, who still needs boats and minecarts to get around?
After 17 years, Minecraft players can finally sit down and rest at any point during their adventures. The latest preview version introduces straw beds and cushions—seemingly simple quality-of-life items that have quickly been repurposed by players for a wealth of unexpected gameplay mechanics.
Straw beds can be crafted using hay bales. They allow players to skip the night without resetting their spawn point; however, these beds are single-use and disappear after being slept in. Cushions are crafted from wool slabs of the same color. Available in 16 colors, they can be placed on flat surfaces, allowing players to sit down instantly.
The official preview notes confirm that cushions are still experimental content. Whether they will make it into the final version and how their rules might be adjusted remains subject to development progress. Minecraft Preview 26.40.30
Upon the release of these new items, the first thing that came to players' minds was, naturally, pranks. Some have hidden note blocks under redstone pressure plates, covering the mechanism with a cushion; when others sit on it or step on the relevant spot, it emits a sound reminiscent of a whoopee cushion. This classic prank prop has now officially been realized in the blocky world.
Beyond mere comedy, more surprising are the movement techniques enabled by cushions. Some players have already used them to build specialized routes, allowing characters to move rapidly between cushions. While the initial setup is clearly time-consuming, the actual travel efficiency makes conventional transport methods like boats seem far less convenient.
Of course, some prefer not to be restricted by fixed routes. They have experimented with using cushions for more free-form and chaotic movement, turning a small item originally intended just for "sitting" into a makeshift vehicle.
Some players have even used cushions to create rideable Yoshi-style builds, further showcasing the versatility of this new mechanic.
In the hands of builders, cushions have quickly become a new decorative material. Sofas, chairs, stools, and flags made from various colors can all be crafted using them. Compared to the old ways of simulating furniture with stairs, signs, or trapdoors, cushions clearly add significantly more detail to interior design.
Some players joke that minecarts might be left crying in a corner, as even a row of cushions might be faster. Others argue that the new "whoopee cushion" gameplay is simply a stroke of genius.
A seemingly ordinary update has already inspired players with new ideas ranging from resting and pranking to traveling and decorating. To what extent cushions will eventually be utilized remains to be seen, depending on how many more wild and creative ideas the Minecraft community can come up with.
