In Minecraft Preview 26.40.30, released by Mojang on July 7, 2026, a brand-new type of bed block was introduced: the Straw Bed. This new item addresses a long-standing player request: the ability to skip the night while exploring without having to constantly reset their spawn point. While its crafting cost is not insignificant, it proves to be highly valuable during long-distance expeditions.
Below, we will explore how to craft the Straw Bed and how it differs from a standard bed.
Minecraft Straw Bed: Recipe and Usage
How to Craft a Straw Bed

The crafting process for the Straw Bed is straightforward. Players simply need to place 3 Hay Bales horizontally in a crafting table to receive 4 Straw Beds at once.
However, while the recipe is simple, the materials may not be immediately easy to gather. A Hay Bale requires 9 Wheat to craft, and Wheat itself must be obtained through farming or collection. Meanwhile, Hay Bales can typically be found near certain villages and Pillager Outposts. Therefore, if you want to craft a Straw Bed as quickly as possible, you should either head to a village or spend some time farming Wheat to accumulate the necessary materials.
How to Use the Straw Bed

Once crafted, the Straw Bed functions similarly to a standard bed, allowing players to sleep and skip the night. However, it features several distinct mechanics.
First, the appearance of the Straw Bed is noticeably different from a regular bed. Because it is made of Hay Bales, it is flatter, sits closer to the ground, and looks more like a makeshift sleeping mat, with even the pillow having a straw-like texture.
The truly critical difference is that it does not set a spawn point and is single-use only. Once a player sleeps in it, the Straw Bed will break and disappear.
This perfectly solves a common issue during wilderness exploration. Many players carry a standard bed with them to sleep at night and pick it back up in the morning. The problem is that as soon as you sleep in a standard bed, the game sets that location as your new spawn point; if you then break the bed, you might respawn at the world spawn point upon death instead of back at your main base.
This is where the Straw Bed shines. It allows you to safely skip the night in the wilderness without overwriting your main base's spawn location. In other words, Mojang has provided a temporary sleeping solution that is much better suited for travelers.
Additionally, according to official notes, the Straw Bed cannot be used in the Nether or the End; if you attempt to sleep in those dimensions, the bed will be destroyed instantly. For players who enjoy long journeys and want to avoid the hassle of managing spawn points, this single-use Straw Bed is a truly practical new option.
