Water & Temperature System

Author: FoxyFall

This add-on introduces interconnected "thirst" and "temperature" mechanics to your Minecraft world, incorporating climate awareness, canteen crafting, water purification, armor insulation, and immersive screen overlays for a challenging survival experience.

Overview

This is a comprehensive survival overhaul that adds a duo of interconnected systems to your world: thirst and temperature. You must stay hydrated, dress appropriately for the weather, and monitor your surroundings carefully. Every biome, every block, and every tactical decision matters to your survival.

Key Features

Temperature System

Your body temperature fluctuates dynamically based on your environment. A "thermometer HUD" is located beside your thirst bar, indicating states: Very Cold, Cold, Normal, Hot, and Very Hot.

Influencing Factors:

  • Biome Detection: The system scans 100+ block types nearby. Deserts/badlands scorch you, snowy tundras freeze you, while forests remain mild.
  • Day/Night Cycle: Midday is the warmest, while nights bring biting cold. Plan your expeditions accordingly.
  • Altitude: High mountains freeze you, while deep underground caves offer relative warmth.
  • Shelter: A solid roof provides insulation, pulling your temperature toward a comfortable range.
  • Heat Sources: Campfires, lava, torches, and furnaces radiate heat with realistic distance falloff.
  • Water Exposure: Swimming cools you over time. Deeper water is colder, and prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia.
  • Armor: Leather is the best cold-weather gear. Beware of heavy metal armor in deserts, as it traps body heat, causing your temperature to spike.
  • Dimension Awareness: The Nether is constantly scorching, while The End remains perpetually cold.

Temperature State Effects:

  • Very Hot: Hunger II, Weakness, and fire damage over time, with a heat haze overlay.
  • Hot: Hunger effect, accompanied by sweat visuals.
  • Normal: No negative effects, comfortable status.
  • Cold: Slowness I, a warning to find a heat source.
  • Very Cold: Slowness II, Mining Fatigue, and freezing damage, with a frost screen overlay. Transitions are smooth and gradual to ensure a seamless experience.

Thirst System

A "thirst bar" appears on your HUD alongside the default hunger bar. Hydration drains based on movement and climate.

Thirst Mechanics:

  • Movement Costs: Walking, sprinting, and jumping drain water, with sprinting costing nearly double.
  • Difficulty Scaling: Thirst depletes faster on higher difficulties.
  • Climate Effects: Deserts drain thirst 60% faster; the Nether drains it twice as fast, while snowy biomes reduce consumption by 40%.
  • Healing Penalty: Health regeneration consumes extra thirst.
  • Food Hydration: Fruits and soups (melons, berries, apples, stews) restore water. Dry foods (bread, cooked meat, dried kelp) increase thirst levels.

Dehydration Penalties:

  • Below 6 Thirst: Slowness IV kicks in.
  • Below 2 Thirst: Nausea effect.
  • At 0 Thirst: You begin taking damage.

Water Canteen & Purification

Craft a "Water Canteen" using leather and string.

Water Sources:

  • Direct Drinking: Sneak + interact (empty hand) near water. Restores 7 thirst but carries a 20% poison risk and a minor hunger effect.
  • Dirty Canteen: Fill at any water source. Contains 3 drinks (5 thirst each), but carries poison and hunger risks.
  • Purified Canteen: Smelt a dirty canteen in a furnace, campfire, or soul campfire. Removes side effects and provides a cooling bonus.
  • Purified Water Bottle: Smelt a regular water bottle for a single-use drink restoring 10 thirst.
  • Cauldrons: Sneak + interact with a water-filled cauldron for emergencies.

Survival Tips

  • Carry a canteen: It is the thin line between life and death in a desert.
  • Purify water: A campfire in the wild is your best defense against poison.
  • Wear leather in the cold: It acts as the best insulation in the game, outperforming diamond armor in freezing weather.
  • Avoid iron in the desert: Metal traps body heat; stick to light gear or leather.
  • Build a shelter: A solid roof (avoid leaves or glass) will keep you well-insulated.
  • Utilize campfires: They keep you warm and purify your canteen.
  • Eat smart: Prioritize melon slices and berries; avoid bread or cooked meat when thirsty.
  • Watch the clock: Travel during mild hours, as nights in snowy biomes can be fatal.
