Minecraft Java Edition System Requirements Raised for the First Time in 17 Years: 16GB RAM Recommended, Processor Must Be at 2020s Level
As Minecraft approaches its 18th anniversary, its hardware requirements are also "coming of age." Microsoft’s official Minecraft team has announced that, for the first time in 17 years, the minimum and recommended system requirements for the Java Edition will be increased to ensure the game continues to run stably both now and in the future. The new targets set by the developers are: minimum requirements for 1080p, 30 FPS, and "Fast" graphics, and recommended requirements for 1080p, 60 FPS, and "Fancy" graphics. This adjustment is significant. In the past, the Java Edition could run on Windows 7 with just 2GB of RAM and an older processor. Now, the minimum RAM requirement has been raised to 8GB or 12GB, and the processor requirement has shifted to models from around 2020, such as the Intel Core i3-10100 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100. In terms of absolute performance, the new minimum requirements are not extreme. The developers noted that compared to many modern AAA titles, the Java Edition still does not require a high-end gaming PC. However, for players who previously met the old recommended specs but now fail to meet the new minimums, this represents a tangible hardware barrier.
These players might consider switching to the Bedrock Edition. The Bedrock Edition has lower requirements for processors, graphics cards, and RAM, and generally runs more efficiently on Windows PCs. Microsoft emphasized that the new requirements will not immediately prevent the Java Edition from launching on lower-end PCs. If a device falls below the new minimum standards, the game may still run for now; however, frame rates, image quality, loading speeds, and overall stability will no longer be guaranteed. As the Java Edition gradually transitions from OpenGL to Vulkan, some older hardware may eventually face launch failures or lose support entirely. Consequently, some long-time players may eventually need to upgrade their computers. However, continuing to play Minecraft does not necessarily require purchasing a high-end rig; a standard gaming desktop or a used gaming laptop that meets the new recommended specifications should be sufficient. The developers have not provided a timeline for when the system requirements might be raised again. Given that it took 17 years for this update, it is possible that these requirements will remain valid for a long time, though this should not be taken as a guarantee that hardware demands will not continue to rise in the future.
